CENTRAL TEXAS – Scott & White Healthcare has started construction on a new facility to house the Bone and Joint Institute. A formal groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction for the 75,000-square-foot, three-story facility. When completed in mid-2013, the building will give patients access to clinical, medical, surgical and rehabilitative care in a single location, and be the most comprehensive, most heavily integrated orthopaedics program in Texas.

“This new building introduces the first coordinated outpatient orthopaedics program in Central Texas, providing the broadest array of orthopaedic specialists and subspecialties in a single location in the state,” said Robert W. Pryor, MD, president and CEO of Scott & White Healthcare. “Combining a full array of orthopaedic specialties in one location will give patients seamless access to the different services they may need, and eliminate delays in elective surgery and support services, providing better outcomes.”

The new facility is located in Temple, adjacent to Scott & White Memorial Hospital and the Scott & White Pavilion ambulatory surgery center. The institute will provide the capacity to care for a growing number of patients, many with increasing complexities who need specialized care. The scope of services will include medical care in the clinic, recovery care with rehabilitation and pain management, graduate medical education training for the next generation of physicians, and medical research to bring the newest therapies to Central Texas.

“This facility has been a dream for all of us in the department,” said Robert Probe, MD, chair, Scott & White Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “I have a great team now, but we have needed the space for more top physicians to come and treat the growing numbers of patients seeking care here. This new facility is essential to ensure that the capacity – in space, equipment and talent – is available to fulfill that growing need.”
