Temple, TX- Six Temple High School students took a trip of a lifetime to the Capitol in Austin on Monday, January 26th, to show legislators how Temple ISD is leading the way when it comes to technology innovation in our schools.

TISD is one of only 10 districts in the state, and the only district in Central Texas, invited to participate in this year’s Texas Capitol Schoolhouse, an event held at the start of each legislative session.

The Capitol Schoolhouse Foundation invited TISD to demonstrate how our 1:1 Chromebook Initiative is changing how students learn. Under the initiative, all THS freshmen receive a Chromebook. They use the device both in school and at home, and upon graduation it’s theirs to keep.

Additionally, TISD is implementing one Chromebook for every two students in the middle and elementary schools, and is using Google Apps for Education for classroom instruction beginning in 3rd grade.

The six students, two seniors and four freshmen, will demonstrate how this technology is already making a difference in their education, and preparing them for the next step upon graduation, with a majority of colleges and businesses now using Google products.

Students will also demonstrate how TISD acquired grants to install WiFi in underserved Temple apartment complexes, and provide MiFi devices for students who don’t have access to WiFi, to allow them to use their Chromebooks at home to complete assignments.

The goal is for legislators and visitors to the Capitol to see and experience technology currently in use in Texas classrooms, by taking the classroom to the Capitol, with Temple students communicating with their teachers and completing assignments throughout the day on the Chromebook.

To experience the Texas Capitol Schoolhouse up close and personal, visit the Capitol Rotunda (basement) on January 26 8AM – 3PM. Come and see our amazing THS students in action as they show the state how TISD is leading the way in technology based education.
